Description:

  • Sometimes, the simplest thing sparks creativity in me. I was looking in my yarn stash one day, trying to come up with some fun color combos for beanies (really, trying to use up scrap yarn as much as possible…) I was thrilled to realized I had all of the colors included in the Hobby Lobby color way “Painted Canyon.” The best part is, I never would have thought to pair these 5 colors together on my, but I think they look so happy! I did my best to translate it into a beanie format, and I’m so tickled with the result! This is an amazing scrap yarn buster, which is something that all of us knitters need.
  • This is a longer beanie at the crown, but fits comfortably snug against the head circumference wise. If you aren’t a fan of the longer/slouchier style of hat, simply remove the second section of hearts! I personally love it topped with a pom pom - it makes the slouch look even better, in my opinion.
  • When choosing colors, I recommend picking up to three brights, and two neutrals. This formula seems to work well for me. You can also try two bright colors and three neutrals. I’ve included pictures of a few other color combos in the pattern. I hope they spark inspiration for you! Have fun with it, and I can’t wait to see what you make!

Skills:

  • I would rate this as a medium beginner pattern, due to the color work
  • If you loathe weaving in ends, this may not be the pattern for you

Size:

  • Finished beanie fits an average adult woman’s head, 21 to 22 in / 53 - 56 cm
  • 8.5 in wide x 11 in tall / 21.5 cm wide x 28 cm tall
  • Measurements taken from item laid flat and unstretched, after steam blocking.

Materials:

  • Either US 13 / 9mm circular needles (if you’re a loose knitter) or US 15 / 10mm circular needles (if you’re a tight knitter like I am) OR needles to obtain gauge
  • Neutral Color 1: 30 yards / 48 g size 6 / super bulky yarn (Recommended: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick)
  • For any of the other colors, you can use a size 6 /super bulky yarn, or you can triple strand a size 4 yarn, which is a REAL stash buster! If you do this, be sure to triple your yardage since you’ll be using three strands.
  • Neutral Color 2 : 15 yards / 24 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
  • Color 1: 15 yards / 24 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
  • Color 2: 10 yards / 16 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
  • Color 3: 10 yards / 16 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
  • Yardage is approximate - your tension/gauge can affect how much yarn is used
