Happy Talk is the perfect shawl for Knit Night, watching tv, travelling or just because you fancy a relaxing knit that is not boring. Worked, in two different yarns – a fingering weight yarn and a kidsilk/fuzzy laceweight yarn. The yarns are worked separately on the main body in stripes to create a light and airy body to the shawl and finished with the choice of either a simple or a pointed border using yarns A and B together.

Happy Talk is the perfect pattern to allow you to change it up and knit it differently to suit your mood; swap your kidsilk for a contrasting yarn or a heavier fuzzy (such as Handmaiden Maidenhair/Lichtfaden Silk Halo/Fyberspates Faery Wings) and use either Yarn A or B for the border. Work a gradient for Yarn A for a different look or use up your left overs from previous shawls and create your own gradient for Yarn A. Knit it huge with extra repeats of the main body to wrap yourself in a cloud of love. Knit is as written for a light and airy shawl/scarf or reduce the number of body repeats and create a lovely little shoulder cover for those cool evenings or air-conditioned rooms. The possibilities are endless!

REQUIREMENTS

Yarn: This could be knit in almost any fingering weight yarn for Yarn A but yardage requirements will vary with each different yarn. The shawl shown was worked in Louisa Harding Pittura (400m/100g) and Rowan Kidsilk Haze (209m/25g). To work this shawl with 15 x Chart 2 and a pointy border with 23 rows I needed 2 x Yarn A (fingering) and 3 x Yarn B. The shawl can be adjusted to suit and I could have worked 13 or 14 x Chart 2 and 13 rows of the pointy border out of 1 x Yarn A and 2 x Yarn B. Each knitter is different so ensure that you weigh your yarn as you go.

Needles: 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5), 4mm (US6) 4.5mm (US7), 5mm (US8) and 5.5mm (US9) circular needles.

You will also need: Stitch Markers, Needle and Blocking Pins.

Size and Gauge: As written; Main Body (x15), 23 rows of Pointed Border – 91 ins (232 cm) wide and 22.5 ins (57.5 cm) deep with a Main Body gauge of 17 stitches to 4 inches after blocking using 3.75mm (US5) needles.

Each repeat of the Chart 2 will make a difference of approximately 4.5 ins (11.5 cm) in width and 1.125 ins (3 cm) in depth.

The pattern is both fully written and charted.

You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer, however coloured pencils could be used to highlight aspects of the pattern.
