Harem Shawlette
The Harem Crescent Shaped Ribs and Lace Shawlette was inspired by the beautiful TSC Artyarns Zara Hand-Dyed Extrafine Italian Merino Wool yarn I discovered in the Z-4 multi-hued pinks and purples shade. It just looked Middle Eastern and feminine. Also, my husband is Middle Eastern, and we have 3 daughters. He is always joking that we are his harem, so I guess you could say the design came out of my own experience! There are no charts in this pattern since the stitches used are quite basic, only written instructions. The yarn I used is DK weight, and I used 1 and ½ skeins of 240 yards to complete it on size 6, 29” long circular needles. It is crescent shaped, knit from the bottom up starting with a simple “harem pants” twisted ribbing , progressing to a “peek-a-boo” lace row of windows, then to a short rows midsection, and, finally, edged at the top with an applied i-cord braid that represents the fancy hairstyles of the harem women. It is lightweight as far as wool goes, but heavy enough to provide warmth as well. It is dry cleanable only since it is fine merino wool. The Harem is over 6 feet in length, a foot wide, and a real eye-catching accessory!
