Harlequin CAL
Part I: As a comic book enthusiast, and avid lover of the cinematic superhero genre I give you the Harlequin CAL. The infinite mosaic scheme is based on an argyle pattern worked flat from the foundation chain with color changes alternating between setting and contrasting colors. For the purposes of maintaining continuity between color changes, even-numbered rows will be worked with the contrasting color Atlas.
Part II: The Harlequin Wrap begins with a foundation chain count of 68 stitches, while the alternate Harlequin Throw starts with a foundation chain of 200. The mosaic scheme is arranged in a rectangular wrap worked flat from the foundation chain. The mosaic scheme for the wrap pattern repeats every 12 stitches and every 54 rows, while the mosaic scheme for the throw pattern repeats every 12 stitches and every 76. Use stitch markers to help maintain pattern repetition every 54/76 rows, per written and Body Graph Pattern, if desired.
Formula for starting foundation chains:
12 x (the number of repeats) + 1 starting border stitch + 1 end border stitch + 1 stitch to make pattern mirror image/symmetrical + 4 extra (2sts left & 2sts right) pattern stitches + 1 turning chain.
First and last SC are worked separate from mosaic scheme. Designed in the overlay mosaic crochet technique, color changes are worked at beginning of each row with a (slst, ch1, sc) serving to anchor work, and secured with a (sc, ch1) at the end leaving a long tail. Ch 1 at beginning and end of row does not count as a stitch and isn’t included in row stitch count or worked. Mosaic scheme repeats every 54/76 rows throughout the body. Chart is read as each row representing one crochet row in the same color. Charts are represented as worked from bottom to top and are read from right to left. No border is included with the wrap as the ends provide a playful fringe that can be kept or woven in as desired.

I had the privilege of getting to know many talented, and inspirational crocheters during the CAL held in my Facebook group from September to October of 2020. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge my incredible tester and technical editor Suyan Fang, as well as Brisa Shepherd for introducing her gorgeous Harlequin CAL mat that ultimately inspired the mosaic scheme for the Harlequin CAL Throw Pattern. I hope you’ll enjoy this pattern, lovelies – Happy Hooking!
