Harrowgate Wrap
Errata: Row 4 of the written lace directions should read: P4, k7, p4, p3, k7, p3….
Lace + garter stitch + color blocking = a good time knitting!
A long panel of lace is framed with blocks of color worked in garter stitch. The center panel of Color A/Color B lace/Color A is worked first; then Color C is added and worked along the top and one long side; and finally Color D is added and worked along the bottom and the remaining long side. The corners are worked as mitered eyelet increases.
I chose a neutral, two cool colors and a warm color. Choose all warm, all cool, all neutral, add in a speckle, have fun.
The lace section is both written and charted.
A schematic is included that shows the direction of knitting and picking up of edge stitches.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length: 68.5” after blocking
Width: 20” after blocking
YARN
The pattern is designed and written for fingering weight yarn.
You will need 175 yards of Color A; 625 yards of Color B; 310 yards of Color C; and 350 yards of Color D.
The sample shown is worked in Palette by Knit Picks, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 231 yds/50 grams. Tranquil (Color A), Oyster Heather (Color B), Calypso Heather (Color C), and Turmeric (Color D).
NEEDLES
US size 5 (3.75mm) 20” circular needle for center panel, or size needed to obtain gauge.
The center panel is worked flat; the circular needle is to accommodate the number of stitches comfortably.
US size 5 (3.75 mm) 40” circular needle for working edgings.
The edgings are worked flat; the circular needle is to accommodate the number of stitches comfortably.
NOTIONS
Removable stitch markers
Blocking pins
Yarn needle
Optional but highly recommended: blocking wires
GAUGE
GAUGE
In garter stitch on gauge needle, 25 sts and 45 rows = 4” after blocking.
In lace pattern on gauge needle, 25 sts and 27 rows = 4” after blocking.
Exact gauge is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
