Harvest Vase
The perfect reward for a summer spent weeding, tending, and nurturing is the gathering of friends for a fall harvest feast. Together, we break bread to celebrate the fruit of our labors as well as the bounty and fertility of the earth. This simple knitted sleeve fits over a wine bottle to enhance a gift for your harvest party host and it becomes a flower vase for the dinner table once its contents have been drunk.
The cable pattern features a rib of seven knit rows that twine together, representing the seven planetary grains of the Waldorf tradition. According to this custom, each day of the week is governed by a solar body, each of which is associated with a grain. By eating these grains on their corresponding days, as many Waldorf kindergartens do, we follow a cosmic and nourishing cadence that fits in neatly with living in tune with other natural rhythms, such as the seasons. The grains are:
Sunday-Sun-Wheat
Monday-Moon-Rice
Tuesday-Mars-Barley
Wednesday-Mercury-Millet
Thursday-Jupiter-Rye
Friday-Venus-Oats
Saturday-Saturn-Maize
