The Hasta Mitts have been designed especially for the 2014 SPA weekend in Freeport, ME. Purple is said to be a calming color—it slows down an over-active heart and relaxes the body into a peaceful state. Leonardo de Vinci claims that you can increase the power of meditation ten-fold by meditating on the gentle rays of violet, as found in church windows.

These mitts have a balancing combination of stitch textures. Balance is an important part of wellness—equal parts of two dualities. When seed stitch is touched it’s stimulating, and the smooth diagonal stockinette stitch is calming.

The Hasta Mitts are knit from the fingers to the wrist, beginning with Seed stitch. Stitches are cast on for the thumb gusset, then the thumb gusset is shaped by increasing at the center of the thumb cast-on sts and decreasing on the opposite side of the mitt. Slowly the Seed stitch is decreased and the increased stitches are worked in St st until all the stitches are in St st. There are some short rows worked at the lower edge to make the lower edge straight across. These can be omitted for a diagonal edge.
