Hatchery Hat
The hat gets its name from its distinctive texture, which resembles the universal hatch pattern symbolizing topsoil. This pattern is commonly used by architects, landscape architects and civil & geotechnical engineers in construction documentation.
Using bulky yarn, this pattern is a super fun and satisfying hat project that is highly textural, knits up quickly and uses simple stitching skills for maximum effect. An atypical construction, the body is knit flat, only going in the round for the crown and brim. This pattern is perfect for a hand-dyed yarn where the potential for pooling is used as an advantage.
The pattern is written for 3 different sizes. Small (Infant/Toddler), Medium (Child/Women’s Beanie) or Large (Women’s Slouch/Men’s beanie)
The hat is knit primarily in basket weave stitch. The result is a textural and visually interesting fabric. The directions for basket weave are described in the pattern.
