Hats: Protection and Fidelity
This hat fits a 21”/53 cm head with no ease.
This hat is knit in the round, offered in three pattern ways with long histories. One is the sunwheel, one is the ivy motif, and the third is the ladder. The sun wheel is one of the oldest symbols from this part of the world. The ivy vine has been a symbol of fidelity because of its tenacious hold, and the ladder pattern that is said to protect the wearer because it symbolizes Jesus’ suffering. The structure of the hat, as was the ladder pattern, is taken from Knitting in the Nordic Tradition by Vibeke Lind.
The sunwheel and ivy patterns were taken from The Mitten Book by Gottfridsson and Gottfridsson.
The gauge of the Ivy Hat was 24st and 29 rows to 4”/10cm.
The gauge of the Sunwheel hat was 26st and 31 rows in 4”/10cm.
As with other chapters and patterns in Woolroads, the narrative is based on research; my own heritage is not Nordic.
