Construction
Calling all medieval enthusiasts! Make your own Hauberk!
Originating in the medieval world, the Hauberk was originally a piece of chain mail armor that consisted of protection on the neck and shoulders. Over time, the armor extended to cover the abdomen and lower mid sections. The hauberk was originally made by using interlocking metal loops to form a coat of armor. While one of the lightest forms of armor, the Hauberk is known to be quite heavy!
The Hauberk cardigan takes the traditional cardigan and infuses it with strong cables and seed stitches (like the chain mail) making the sleeves the emphasis of the sweater. This cardigan is knit bottom up beginning with the sleeves, then the body using worsted weight yarn. The simple but elegant design uses raglan shaping along the yoke and extra long cable infused sleeves, making it super cozy and enjoyable. There are optional short row sections along the neck and back to give this cardigan a well tailored look. The neck ribbing and button band are picked up and worked last and finished off with classic wooden buttons. This pattern can easily be adapted to fit any length body or sleeve. The original pattern is worked using Malabrigo Rios in the color Wholegrain. Cable pattern is worked in chart only. This pattern has not made it through all stages of testing.
