Hawaiian reef fish
As much as I love all the wonderful creatures inhabiting the worlds’ dry lands, I am even more fascinated by Earths’ magical watery worlds and their colorful inhabitants. Here is a way to dive into the enchanting and spectacularly splashy underwater world, without even getting your feet wet!
This pattern contains the instructions for three colorful Hawaiian reef fish: the reef triggerfish (or humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, the state fish of Hawaii), the brightly colored yellow tang (or lauiʻīpala) and the dazzling flame wrasse. So color up your knitting by creating these fabulously flashy, splashy fish!
The reef fish were knitted on 2.25 mm double pointed needles (UK 13, US 1). Together, they make a great mock aquarium or a colorful crib mobile. The reef triggerfish measures 11 cm, the yellow tang is 10 cm and the flame wrasse 13 cm. Suggestions for coloring are given, but maybe let your imagination run wild! Only small amounts of yarn (20- 25 m per fish) are needed, so a reef fish is a great project to use up any scraps you have lying around.
Each fish is an easy, fast and fun project and can be done in a few hours.
The fish are knitted flat and ask for some intarsia colorwork and the transferring and picking up of stitches (to knit the fins directly onto the body. Indicated also is how they can be done separately).
Enjoy your Knitseas!
