This colorful cowl is knit with tonal DK yarn, using fisherman’s rib to border an allover mosaic stitch pattern in contrasting colors. Knit seamlessly in the round, it is a relaxing, but intriguing cowl to knit. Inspired by the Hawthorn tree, sacred in Gaelic mythology and lore, the motif of hawthorn leaves and berries is created using a mosaic brocade stitch pattern. Mosaic knitting is perfect for knitters who are new to knitting colorwork. This technique takes striped knitting and transforms it into decorative elements with slipped stitches!

Materials:
Yarn: Malabrigo Arroyo (100% merino wool; 335 yds 306 m/100 g): Color Borraja (MC), 1 skein, Color Pearl (CC), 1 skein.

Needles: Size US 4 (3.5mm) needles, 24” (60cm) circulars.
Or size needed to obtain gauge. Note: gauge swatches should be blocked for most accurate measurements.

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, blocking supplies.

Gauge:
23 sts and 34 rows = 4” 10cm in St st after blocking.
22 sts and 36 rows = 4” 10cm in pattern after blocking.

Finished measurements after blocking: Approximately 9” 22 cm tall and 26” 56 cm around.

Pattern Notes:
The cowl is worked in the round, knitting the two colors to create a repeating brocade motif that sits between the ribbed edging. The yarn color changes will be hidden on the inside of the cowl as you knit in the round, be careful of your tension when switching colors to create a smooth and even fabric. The cowl uses the mosaic knitting technique to achieve the brocade stitch pattern created by alternating rows of two colors (working one color at time), and slipping stitches from the row below without working them.
