Hazel Park Shawl
There are times when you just want to feel decked out. Draped in decoration. Positively festooned. The Hazel Park shawl is up for the challenge. If a Christmas tree took shawl form, it’d be this gently scalloped half-circle with the barest hint of ruffle. Its airy construction means it looks just as good swooshed over your favorite sweater (or party dress) as it does piled in drapey folds to peek out of your coat collar.
Worked in contrasting colors of your favorite fingering-weight yarn, this shawl pairs relaxing bands of garter stitch with a simple ripple of feather and fan lace for a project that’s perfect couch, car, or holiday party knitting. Pick a pair of colors or make each lace festoon a different color with mini-skeins or your store of leftovers. It’s all about how you want to be decked out!
Yarn
Murray & Company Wool Goods Classic Sock (75/25 Superwash Merino-Nylon, 463 yards 423 meters / 3.5 oz 100 grams) 2 skeins “Ceramic Light Up Tree” and 1 skein “Christmas Pajamas”
MC: 750 yds / 686 m
CC: 250 yds / 229 m
The sample is worked in a lightweight, superwash sock yarn and yields a lacy, lightweight shawl. Choosing a non-superwash wool will add body and up the snuggle factor, but it won’t be as drapey.
If you’d like to use minis or yarn leftovers for the lacy festoons, the approximate yardages for each are as follows:
Festoon 1 – 20 yds / 18 m
Festoon 2 – 49 yds / 45 m
Festoon 3 – 39 yds / 45 m
Festoon 4 – 76 yds / 69 m
Festoon 5 – 76 yds / 69 m
Needles
Size US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needle at least 40 inches / 100 cm long
