The inspiration for the Heart in the Home Cowl design was from the book Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys & Arans, by Gladys Thompson. The author researched fishermen sweater patterns, documenting a rich history of stitch patterns and sweater designs that were seldom written down.

There are many traditional stitch patterns described in the book. One that caught this knitter’s fancy was a description of stitches knit in the yokes of Hebrides jerseys, “If the diamond has a heart inside it, that means the heart is in the home”. In the book Cables, Diamonds, & Herringbone by Sabine Domnick, the stitch pattern is charted as a diamond within a diamond.

The Heart in the Home Cowl was inspired by both books, and charted with bold versions of hearts and diamonds within larger diamonds. The cowl is knit in the round, starting with the Beginning Border Ruffle, then the Main Pattern with the Heart in the Home stitch pattern, and finishing with the Ending Border Ruffle.

The cowl is also reversible, with the hearts now in knit stitches (see additional photos). The edging is also different on the the reverse side, resembling pleats.

For an alternative way to wear the cowl, on those extra cold days, double the cowl around your neck, and arrange the layers of ruffles (see additional photos).
