Heart of My Heart Placemat
Heart of My Heart is a versatile crochet pattern in perfect Valentine’s Day shades of red, pink, and white. 7 page PDF. The Heart motif is crocheted in the round featuring a heart-in-heart rosy pink center surrounded by a deep red outer heart, and trimmed in a graceful, ruffled, white border. The finished Heart is sewn to the Background which is separately crocheted in rows of rosy pink, then finished with white and red edging rounds.
NOTE: This pattern was created with Red Heart Super Saver Yarn which is somewhat heavier than most worsted yarns. I have also listed on Ravelry another pattern I designed to work with Brava Worsted Weight Yarn - Heart of My Heart Placemat II for Brava. It looks almost identical but has a slightly simpler construction for the background. That is the pattern I’d recommend if you plan to use a lighter worsted yarn than Red Heart Super Saver.
The pattern works in several fun and exciting ways. Instead of using as a placemat, hang the finished work as a decorative wall hanging. Use the heart motif alone as an applique. Change up the color scheme for a distinctive look or to match any décor. Consider burgundy, orchid, and ivory hues for a more Victorian look; tones of cream, taupe and ecru for an earthy feel; or, perhaps, shades of purple for a whole different vibe! Bonus idea: Make a second backing to join and create a pillow! Endless possibilities!
Worked in Red Heart Super Saver, the finished work measures about 15” wide by just over 12” high. The Heart is about 10” across at the widest point by just over 8.5” if you measure between lines extended from the top of the curve and the bottom point.
Skill Level: Intermediate. Some experience helpful.
Materials:
Hook: G Hook (4.25 mm)
Gauge: 6 stitches and 3 rows in Double Crochet with Red Heart Super Saver equals about 2”. Red Heart Super Saver is a bit heavier than some worsted yarns. If you use a different yarn, adjust hook size if necessary to get the proper gauge and size.
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver. For Wall Hanging or 1 Placemat (approximate yardages): Light Raspberry – 105 yards; Cherry Red – 70 yards; White - 40 yards. Multiply yardages for additional placemats. Pillow requires about double the yardage.
Tapestry Needle, Yarn Pins (recommended), Stitch Markers (optional)
For Wall Hanging: About 13” length of a 3/8” diameter dowel. A dowel can be purchased in a 3 foot length from craft stores and easily cut (very carefully!) to size with a small hacksaw. Dowels are also sold in home improvement stores and sometimes they will cut it for you. Other options for hanging are grosgrain ribbon, jute, or yarn, however, a dowel keeps the work from sagging. For Pillow: Fiber Fil.
