The idea for this heart-shaped bag came to me at 3:00am one night. It came out exactly as I had hoped and I hope you love it as much as I do. This bag is customizable in color, yarn type, handle length, and even size of heart.

About the Pattern:

  • This bag is made in three parts: two hearts plus a handle that doubles as the sides of the bag. Also, an optional closure.
  • Basic knowledge of the slip stitch, single crochet, and how to read a pattern are needed. The puff stitch is explained further in the pattern.

Materials needed:
• 2 - 4oz skeins of Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream 100% cotton yarn, weight 4, in any color (see notes below)
• Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Safety pins or stitch markers
• Optional: button or toggle for closure, plus sewing needle and thread

About the yarn:

  • I like Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn for this project because it is a stiffer yarn and gives the bag structure. You could opt to use a different color of yarn for the handle, or a different color for each heart. Go crazy! I have also made this bag in acrylic with good results, but I used a size G (4.24mm) hook to tighten up the stitches.
  • Depending on how tight you crochet, will depend on how much yarn you need. I crochet quite tightly, and only use one skein. But some of my testers required more. So buy two skeins to be on the safe side.

Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9 puffs x 11 rows; 1” x 4” = 5 st x 16 rows of sc

Finished Size:
Heart is approx 6” x 7”; the hanging height of the bag with handle is approx 25”
