Hearts and diamonds is a very stylish adult size messy bun OR beanie hat which keeps the head warm while allowing the hair to be worn up. Interlocking hearts are fun and popular and this pattern pairs them with the diamond stitch for a cute fun look which is an enjoyable challenge to make. This pattern is of intermediate difficulty but does contain details on how to make the special stitches.
The pattern starts out with the ring of hearts. There are twelve hearts so color choices can vary. I chose to use three different colors for the hearts so there are four hearts in each color but you may decided to use two, three, four or six different colors. After completing the ring of hearts, using dark grey so the colors of the hearts stood out, I made the brim, which is designed to be wide enough to cover the forehead and ears to keep them warm with the open hearts up across the hair. Lastly the top section of the hat is made finishing with the final row around a thick elastic hair tie so it can be stretched open to allow the hair to be pulled through the top of the hat. Finishing at the top also means that the hat will not unravel should the hair tie break. This pattern also includes instruction on how to close the top to make a beanie hat.

I used Red Heart Super Saver (medium weight; 100% acrylic) in Grey Heather for the body of the hat. For the hearts I used a small amount of Perfect Pink, Minty and Orchid.
You will need a crochet hook size I/9 – 5.5mm and a yarn needle to weave in ends. You will also need a thick hair elastic for the top of the hat.
This pattern uses US terminology.
Basic stitches: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc2tog.
