Hearts and Hugs Cell Phone Cozy
Homeless women live unsafe lives. The chaos of their lives makes it very hard to advance out of homelessness and into jobs and homes. One tool that can help them find safety, shelter, work, counseling and order is a cell phone. Having a pouch for a cell phone enables them to keep a cell phone hidden beneath their clothes. This pattern grew out of a project to provide cell phone cozies for the women of Esther’s Place in Everett, WA. It is produced in the hope that you will also want to reach out and help those living chaotic and dangerous lives.
$1.00 will be donated to Esther’s Place for every pattern sold.
Yarn: Any sport weight yarn with a fairly durable fiber.
Needles: Size US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge, 16 inches (40 cm) or longer. Alternatively you could use 3 US 4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles.
Gauge: 21 stitches and 31 rounds to 4” (10 cm) worked in moss stitch after blocking.
Notions: You will need a snap, button, or Velcro to close the flap. You will also need a tape measure, a cable needle, and a darning needle. If you use a Velcro closure, you will need a hot glue gun and a glue stick for fabric to secure the Velcro. Optionally: 2 stitch markers and an I-cord maker such as the Embellish-Knit for making the neck strap.
Difficulty: Intermediate: skills required are Judy’s Magic Cast On, basic shaping, cabling, yo, dropped stitches, knitting in the round, I-cord and slipped stitches.
Hearts and Hugs uses Main Color (MC) slipped stitch cables above a background of moss stitch worked with both MC and Contrast Color (CC). Slipped stitch cables achieve amazing results without a lot of skill or effort. There are unlimited possibilities for slipped stitch cables that are beginning to be explored by various designers. This pattern is a good introduction to slipped stitch cables.
