“In the race and in the strife, create in our breasts hearts of steel!”Olympic Hymn, English free translation

Honor the 19 women who broke barriers at the 2016 Rio Olympics and have fun expanding your crochet skills when you make and wear this light and lacy shawl.

Made in red, white, and blue with Hearthside Fibers’ Galaxy yarn, this scrumptious shawl is the perfect summer wrap: lightweight yet cozy, with subtle sparkles from a metallic strand in the yarn. (Also shown in Lorna’s Laces special edition Rio 2016 yarn edged with Fiber Optic Yarns Kashmir.)

The body of the shawl is double-ended Tunisian crochet, creating a texture similar to knitted lace. Standard crocheted borders in a scalloped design suggest the Olympic rings and add body and drape. A photo-tutorial illustrates each step for the Tunisian double crochet stitch pattern.

Hook: You’ll need a double-ended size tunisian crochet hook, size 7 (4.5 mm). I recommend Denise Interchangeable crochet hooks 2 size 7 (4.5 mm) hooks with 15-inch cord.
