Cute Heart stitch knit hat with a matching pom pom!
I started my hat with 57 stitches for a large adult size (about 23-24 inches around base); adjust size by casting on fewer/more stitches, as long as your stitch count is divisible by 4 + 1.
I used a pair of size 5mm circular knitting needles that are 18” long for the ribbing; and a pair of size 8mm circular knitting needles that are 18” long for the rest of the hat.

The yarns I used were:
“Black” Bulky weight yarn from Lion Brand Thick & Quick, for the background color;
And for the hearts, I didn’t have any bulky weight red yarn in stock, so I used 4 strands of worsted weight yarns, in different shades of red, to make up a bulky weight when held together. I used 2 strands of “Cherry Red”, 1 strand of “Burgundy”, both from Red Heart Super saver; and I used 1 strand of “Red” from Caron Simply Soft. You could just use any bulky weight yarn for the hearts.

To make the liner for this hat, I used Loops & Threads Country Loom in “Rich Granite”, which is another bulky weight yarn, and made a plain knit hat of the same size, using the same needles and the same number of stitches.
And to attach the 2 layers together, I used a size 8mm crochet hook, and more of the same skein of Thick & Quick “Black” yarn, attaching them with a slip stitch. If you prefer, you could just sew both layers together, or just leave the hat without a liner.

To make the pom pom at the top of the hat, I used some “Black” yarn from Red Heart Super saver; and, more of my red yarns I used as the hearts color; I used a piece of 4” by 5” cardboard with a ¼” by 2 ¾” slot cut out of one of the 4” sides, as a pom pom maker; and I used a sharp tapestry needle, to sew on the pom pom. If you prefer, use a store bought pom pom instead, or don’t add a pom pom!
