Tunisian crochet “Heartstrings” beanie.

This hat is a great pattern for someone who is just learning Tunisian Crochet or color work or both. This hat starts at the bottom up and is worked flat and sewn together. Normally I don’t like seaming things together but Tunisian crochet color work required two separate working yarns for each pass, so that means two on the forward and two on the return - that’s 4 strands of yarn to keep untangled. No thank you!!!! I’ll take the seam. If you feel up for a challenge feel free to skip the seam and work this hat in the round if you have the know how and the patience.

Because Tunisian crochet is always worked on the right side you end up with alot more fabric bunched up in the back of your work than you do in front which can result is your work curling up. To avoid this I have added some ribbing to the bottom of the hat. Tunisian crochet ribbing has absolutely no stretch to it at all so this is purely for looks and to stop the bottom of the hat from rolling up. After washing the hat and putting it in the dryer (because I was too impatient to wait for it to air dry) I still needed to iron the bottom of the hat to get rid of the curl. I suspect if you air dry your hat that won’t be necessary.

to complete this pattern you will need:

-two skeins of contrasting yarn in worsted weight. You can use a partial skein for the colorwork work however the main color of the hat you will need almost an entire 100 gr skein. Tunisian crochet uses up a lot of yarn.

-Tunisian crochet hook at least 10 inches long

• Tapestry needle
