Heartwood is a wide triangular shawl, available in two sizes, worked top down in a soft merino fingering weight yarn. The visually interesting fabric of the shawl is created by combining stocking stitch sections with eyelet and textured stitch sections.

Depth at widest point: 17.5 (23.5) inches/44.5 (59.5) cm.

Yarn Requirements
Approximately 445 (800) yards/407 (732) metres of fingering/4 ply yarn.
Large version (brown shawl) shown in Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles Fingering (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 400 yards/366 metres per 100 grams) in Damned Nation.
Small version (grey shawl) shown in Malabrigo Mechita Fingering (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 420 yards/384 metres per 100 grams) in Plomo.

Needles & Notions
6 US / 4 mm circular needles, 32 inches/80 cm (to accommodate the large number of stitches), or needle size to obtain gauge.
Tapestry/yarn needle to weave in yarn ends.
Stitch marker (optional).

Gauge
20 sts and 32 rows per 4 inches/10 cm in stocking stitch after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial but a different gauge will alter the finished size, drape and amount of yarn required.

Construction
Heartwood is worked flat in one piece from the top down. Two increases at the beginning and end of every RS row, along with two increases at the centre spine, creates a wide shallow triangle shape.
