Description
This is a beginner friendly pocket shawl. The stitch pattern may look intricate but is uses very basic stitches, chains, single crochet, and double crochet. The pattern offers several different finishing options: a picot edging on the ends; a decorative edging along the sides; pockets; and tassels or fringe. The pattern includes instructions for all the stitches and techniques used on the shawl and has links to several helpful video tutorials that will guide you along. It is a perfect project to pick up when you want something mindless and meditative to crochet.

This is a very special design to me personally as it started my Meaningful Makes journey. When I got the news that my cousin Heather, who lived on the other side of the world, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer I felt helpless. I couldn’t “be” there to support her in the usual ways with the miles between us. My solution was to pick up my hook and create a wearable hug for her. Something she would wrap herself in when she needed to feel some extra love and support. This is the shawl I created.

Cancer has touched all our lives. My goal is to offer a design that everyone, even a beginner, can make to use as their personal expression of support somewhat like I did. This comfort shawl can be made and given to those that are on their own cancer journey. Colour can be an important part of this shawl. There is a list of 38 colours of ribbons used to bring awareness to different cancer types included in this pattern. Selecting a colour in a shade that matches the cancer your recipient is battling or has battled makes a meaningful connection for them.

My cousin lost her battle, but she told me how comforted she felt each time she put her shawl around her shoulders. That gave me comfort to know. I hope others using this pattern will have a similar experience.
