Hedera Helix is a boxy, oversized sweater with Brioche stitch motifs. It is knit from the bottom up, starting in the round until the bottom of the armholes. Then, front and back are worked separately, flat, while shaping the shoulders and neckline. The shoulder seams are grafted with a three-needle bind off. The sleeves are worked separately from the bottom up and grafted onto the body. The bottom hem has a slight inverted v-shape because of the ‘pull’ of the brioche, but this can be blocked straight if preferred.
Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9)
To fit bust circumference: 29.5 (33.5, 37.5, 41, 45) (49, 53, 57, 61)” / 75 (85, 95, 104, 114.5) (124.5, 135, 145, 156) cm. with 8 – 18” / 20 – 46 cm positive ease, pre-blocking. The original fit is very oversized, choose one or more sizes smaller if you want a more fitted look.
Finished pre-blocked measurements (look for schematic in photos):
A: Bust circumference: 41.25 (45.25, 49.25, 53.25, 57) (61, 65, 69, 72.75)”/ 105 (115, 125, 135, 145) (155, 165, 175, 185) cm.
B: Upper arm circumference: 21.75 (22.5, 23.25, 23.75, 24.5) (25, 25.75, 26.5, 27.25)”/ 55.5 (57, 59, 60.5, 62) (63.5, 65.5, 67.5, 69) cm.
C: Armhole depth: 11 (11.25, 11.5, 12, 12.25) (12.5, 13, 13.25, 13.5)” / 28 (28.5, 29, 30.5, 31) (32, 33, 33.5, 34.5) cm.
D: Body length from underarm at side seam: 8.5” / 21.5 cm all sizes.
E: Center-neck-to-wrist length: 29.25 (29.5, 29.75, 30, 30.25) (30.5, 30.75, 31, 31.25)”/ 74.5 (75, 75.5, 76, 77) (77.5, 78, 78.5, 79.5) cm.
F: Sleeve length: 19 (18, 17.5, 16.5, 15.5) (15, 14, 13.5, 13)” / 48 (46, 44.5, 42, 39.5) (38, 35.5, 34.5, 33) cm.
NOTE ON FINISHED SIZES: these are pre-blocked measurements. As brioche is VERY stretchy and can be blocked in a variety of ways, let alone the differences that various yarns can give you, I decided to provide the pre-blocked measurements only. My sample sweater grew about 6” / 15cm in circumference around the bust once blocked, but barely anything anywhere else. Take this into consideration when picking your size. Also consider your sleeve length which will increase if the body becomes wider. I suggest to swatch carefully and measure both the unblocked and the blocked swatch
Gauge
Before and after blocking, over 4 x 4”/10 x 10 cm in stockinette: 15 sts x 24 rows.
Before blocking, over 4 x 4”/10 x 10 cm in brioche stitch: 15 sts x 24 rows.
After blocking, over 4 x 4”/10 x 10 cm in brioche stitch: 11 sts x 24 rows.
Note: If you match this gauge, your finished post-blocking measurements will increase by about 6” / 15 cm in circumference around the bust. If your blocked swatch is between 11 and 15 sts per 4” / 10 cm then it will grow less, if your blocked swatch gauge is <11 sts per 4” / 10 cm it will grow more.
