This is originally designed as a vest with short sleeves, but you can easily make it as a sweater. The sleeves are picked up after knitting the front and back and seaming them together, so you can simply choose to continue knitting down until you get full-length sleeves.

The vest is knit horizontally, with the front and back knit separately and seamed together. The boat neck is created by picking up stitches and knitting a rib in the round. Same for the sleeves and the waist rib.

I created instructions and charts for 5 sizes, from XS to XL women’s size, based on the Craft Yarn Council standards. However, adapting it to different sizes is easy. The cable panel repeat is included as a standalone, so you can use it to calculate other sizes. This means you can make this vest for men too, and even for children.

Each size has its own pages! This means written instructions + chart for each of the 5 standard sizes. No more counting numbers between brackets to keep track of your size. The pattern has negative ease built into it, so the vest will have a snug fit.

Use Aran or bulky yarn and check your gauge, or be prepared to adapt the pattern by knitting a swatch and doing your calculations.

All instructions are in English, with measurements in metric & imperial, and needle sizes in US, UK and international standards.

You will need:

  • Knitting needles size 6 mm (10 US, 4 UK).
  • Crochet needle size 6mm (US J, UK 4) to pick up stitches and create the neck, waist and sleeve edges.
  • Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.
  • Tapestry needle to bind off (optional)

Approximate yardage by size:

  • X–Small: 350–400 metres (390–440 yards)
  • Small: 430–500 metres (470–545 yards)
  • Medium: 500–580 metres (545–635 yards)
  • Large: 580–660 metres (364–720 yards)
  • X–Large: 630–720 metres (690–790 yards)
