This pattern came about because I wanted a shawl that was functional yet flirty, sturdy yet soft. I wanted whimsy that could actually keep a brisk fall wind at bay. I needed that wardrobe centerpiece – the sun at the center of my fashion universe – hence was born Heliocentric.

Fond of texture, I incorporated seed and moss stich to firm up the fabric and shield off our strong Kansas winds. Still, part of the beauty of a shawl are the delightful lacy elements. In Heliocentric, the textured bits give way to Kansas-esque wheatfields, and a somewhat non-traditional border seemingly straight made of sunshine.

Heliocentric is designed to bring a bit of bright cheer to the knitter.

There is a total of six different sets of patterning, with a new set beginning after an increase row. I have separated each set of pattern instructions apart, labeling each section as its own “Round Set”. Each set expands the shawl exponentially. The final round set, and subsequent steps up to the border, are somewhat of a departure from a traditional pi shawl. The last Round Set is interrupted by a repeat of some key patterning elements from early in the design as something of a reminder from where we have come. The border also features repeats of earlier elements to tie everything together. The more solid, textured areas add a hint of practicality in their warmth, while the lacy bits add interest, a bit of fun, and whimsy.
