Helix Felicis
Helix Felicis is a two-skein-wonder. It can be knitted with any yarn weight and any yarn. All you need is two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go together well but are distinctive enough to clearly see the individual modules – any of the above combinations will work well.
Helix Felicis comes in two sizes, Medium and Large. So you can use any yarn you like. The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting, the weight of your yarn and how many repeats you want to knit. If you knit loosely I suggest you will need at least 390 yards.
I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and I used 820 yards of each color for one large version (made with Wollbonbon Merino 4 ply - 11”/28cm width - 74”/188cm length - with 6 repeats).
I made a second large version with Schoppel Laceball, using two strands at a time to achieve a longer color gradient. I used 570 yards of each color (11”/28cm width - 60”/152cm length - with 5 repeats).
The medium version presented in the pictures was knitted with one skein of Jilly by Dream In Color Yarn and one skein of Tosh Merino Light by Madelinetosh. I used 390 yards of each color and thicker needles (11“/28cm width - 39“/99cm length - 3 repeats).
Helix Felicis is a fully reversible shawl. One side will highlight Yarn A and the other side will highlight Yarn B. The shape resembles a double helix which comes in handy when you knit only three repeats. There is a tiny opening between the bows so you can pull one end of the shawl through the hole to fasten it.
Helix Felicis is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved. All instructions are given in written and charted form. You will find a lot of graphics and photo tutorials on the techniques of shaping and joining the modules. This makes Helix Felicis a doable project for most knitters.
