Helix hat (DK)
Learn a new stashbusting technique with these simple but highly customisable hats. Instructions are provided for 2,3, 4 or 5 different colours and for wider stripes. You can also follow instructions for beanie or slouch options. These hats use helix knitting in the round to create jogless stripes. Add a pompom with any leftovers!
Pattern and construction
Pattern is written only (no charts). Links to tutorials for cast on method, an overview of helix knitting and other useful techniques such as quick technique for pompoms with left over yarn.
Hats are knit bottom up in the round; pattern assumes circular needles and magic loop for the crown decreases. It is however easy to substitute your preferred methods of knitting in the round and small circumference knitting in the round.
Sizes
Sizes are finished hat circumference. Please choose a size approx 5cm/2 inches less that your actual head circumference for a snug fit. Pattern contains instructions for adjusting length for beanie (with or without turned back brim) or slouch options.

I used Adriafil Mirage DK - a 50% wool, 50% acrylic yarn. But any DK wool or acrylic or mixed yarn would be fine here. Light worsted could also be substituted at this gauge.
Yardages are for a beanie without a turned brim; allow extra for slouch or turned brim versions:
