Hello sailor
For a long time I have wanted to make a basic child pullover for new knitters (and also for the more experienced ones that want a fast project with a nice result).
It had to be easy, but with something extra to make it really nice. The boat-neck, cables and stripes ensures a comfy and nautical sweater for the young ones:)
When we are entering the boating/sailing season I found that a pretty striped sweater must be the right thing.
And the cables add the extra touch.
White and blues are always lovely, but the sweater would be equally nice in other combinations, or even in one colour only.
Construction
The body of the pullover is worked bottom-up, starting from the hem in cable-patterns, followed by the stripe-pattern section.
At underarms work is divided for upper front and back to be continued in separate pieces of stripes and cables.
Shoulders are worked up using the 3-needle bind-off method.
The sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round, from picked-up sts along the armhole openings.
Sizes
There are 5 sizes to choose from. Finished chest measurements are:
6 – 12 months: 48.5 cm/19”
2 – 3 years: 55.5 cm/22”
4 – 6 years: 62.5 cm/24.5”
6 – 8 years: 69.5 cm/27.5”
8 – 10 years: 76.5 cm/30”
Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a DK weight yarn in a nice and soft quality.
If the pullover is going to be used a lot, it is also recommendable to use a superwash yarn. I used Sandnes Garn “Duo” to work the pullover, in two shades: Vit 1002 (CC), Marineblå 5575 (MC). This DK weight yarn comes in balls of 50 gr/1.76 oz, and 115 m/126 yards. Of this particular yarn you will need approximately 140/180/250/350/450 m = 152/196/272/380/490 yards of each colour. Keep in mind that yardage may vary from brand to brand and from knitter to knitter. Needles: size 3.5 mm/US4 (or size to obtain gauge)
Notions: cable needle, 1 removable stitch-marker
Gauge
23 sts and 30 rounds/rows in stockinette sts = 10x10 cm/4x4”
The pattern
The cables are written out round-by-round (not charted)
All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches
All necessary stitch-counts are given
There is a schematic.
Knitting skills: easy
You need to be able to cast on, bind-off, work knit and purl sts,
pick up sts along an edge, bind off sts using the 3-needle bind-off method.
