My daughter inspired me to create this slipped stitch & cable pattern that resembles a strand of DNA…it coordinates with my Heredity Socks. Knit one of these slouchy hats for your favorite science nerd!
PATTERN DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Adventurous Beginner-to-Intermediate; skills required include: tubular cast-on (uses very basic crochet), slip stitch colorwork & cabling slipped stitches
GAUGE: 20 sts & 25 rows = 4“10 cm in stockinette stitch, blocked
FINISHED SIZES: Child (Adult S, M, L, XL)
Hat Circ: 16.75 (18, 19, 20.25, 21.5)“/42.5 (45.75, 48.25, 51.5, 54.5) cm; 2“/5 cm negative ease in circumference is recommended for a comfortable fit
Height: 8 (8, 9, 9, 9)“/20.25 (20.25, 22.75, 22.75, 22.75) cm
MATERIALS:
2 or more colors of worsted weight (wool or wool blend yarn recommended); MC should provide good contrast to CC(s). Shown above in size Adult M: 83yds/38g MC used and 63yds/29g total CC used. Test knitters used 65yds-111yds MC and 47yds-76yds CC(s)
U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) 16“/40cm circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge), with either a second 16“ circular for smaller-circumference knitting at the crown or a set of double pointed needles; 2nd circular needle is needed for the provisional CO (can be 1 size smaller for CO only)
4.5 mm crochet hook for provisional cast-on
4-5 yds smooth cotton waste yarn
Cable needle (optional)
Stitch markers in 3 styles: 1 for BOR, 2 mA, 4 mB
Darning needle
