Herma
An innovative design for the “Herma” shawl. Inspired by the 3D geometrics facades of modern architecture. Worked flat, with different side to side, the 3D technique is used, giving the shawl an original and unusual double-face effect, which, only in the end, reveals itself in complete harmony.
Pattern includes photo tutorial, written instructions row by row, charts and charted instructions.
CONSTRUCTION
A new unusual and “articulated” shawl construction!
It’s made of 4 sections and each section is worked in a different direction, no stitches put back on the needles later! The whole shawl is worked flat and sideways. The construction allowed me to create a reversible shawl worked not by using double knitting technique, but using a 3D knitting technique.

STITCHES USED
Cable cast on, Garter stitch, Short rows, 3D Lace Stitch (chart), M1+w&t, Lace Stitch
GAUGE
Gauge is not important as long as you like the fabric that you’ve created after blocking your swatch.
I used:
“Cristallo” yarn, row 4 mm (US 6) to get 16 sts x 22 rows = ~ 10 cm/4 inch in garter stitch after blocking
“Cristallo” yarn, row 4,5 mm (US 7) to get 18 sts x 23 rows = ~ 10 cm/4 inch in garter stitch after blocking
“Cristallo” yarn, row 5 mm (US 8) to get 20 sts x 24 rows = ~ 10 cm/4 inch in garter stitch after blocking
“Bluebell” yarn, row 5 mm (US 8) to get 19 sts x 24 rows = ~ 10 cm/4 inch in garter stitch after blocking
SIZE
“Cristallo” yarn, row 4 mm (US 6) = 190cm x 90cm /74inch x 35inch
“Cristallo” yarn, row 4,5 mm (US 7) = 196cm x 94cm /77inch x 37inch
“Cristallo” yarn, row 5 mm (US 8) = 228cm x 104cm /89nch x 41inch
“Bluebell” yarn, row 5 mm (US 8) = 194cm x 88cm /76nch x 33inch
The Herma shawl was inspired by Herma Parking Building
