This hat is knitted using undyed, natural shades of Shetland wool. It contains a combination of traditional motifs and others which I designed myself, forming a non-repeating pattern around the body. It’s named after my home town of Herne Bay, in South East England.

Uradale Yarns Jumper Weight Organic Undyed Unbleached Yarn
(2 ply, 86m per 25g ball).
Graeff (Shetland black) – 25g
Laebrakk (darkest grey) – 25g
Glansin (silver grey) – 25g
Flukkra (white) – 25g
Moorit (brown)– 25g
Beremeal (mid fawn) – 25g
Oatmeal (light fawn) – 25g

2.75mm circular needle (for magic loop), or set of DPNs
3mm circular needle (for magic loop), or set of DPNs
Stitch marker (optional)
Tapestry needle

Tension/size
8 sts and 9 rows per inch (2.5 cm) using 3mm needles. One size, to fit a medium-large adult head. Finished circumference 22 inches (56cm). It’s plenty big enough for me and I have quite a large head! For a snugger fit, drop down a needle size or replace with a smaller gauge yarn, eg Jamieson’s Spindrift or Jamieson and Smith 2 ply jumper weight.
