Herringbone Rug Welcome Mat
I knitted this rug using US11 circular needles, 26” in length, one 1 lb. cone of Kraemer’s Flannel rug yarn and one 1 lb. cone of Kraemer’s Fieldstone rug yarn. As of October 2021 rug yarn cones were available at patternsbykraemer.com for $19.95 each. Yarn must be 100% wool and not super wash. The rug is knitted in the round, forming a tube, then felted in the washing machine and cut apart to make a flat rectangle.
Pattern is very detailed. Although it is stranded (knit with 2 colors), rug is nearly all knit with almost no purling. Herringbone pattern is so simple, you will have option to work without it after first 6 rounds. There is step by step explanation on how to continue without pattern if you choose. However, you can continue using pattern throughout. There are photos of unfelted tube, felted tube, cutting steek, and blocking work.
You will need a a laundry bag or pillowcase to put your rug into before washing in washing machine. A good steam iron will help to flatten out edges of damp work and a scissors is needed to cut felted tube. A blocking board, or similar substitute, is also recommended to block your rug after felting.
Although the pattern produces a 19” x 26” rug, pattern includes very simple directions on how to make rug as wide or tall as you like. Additional yarn may be required.
