Hexagon Blanket
1/31/24 Update: I published an update fixing 2 pattern errors and adding 2 pictures (end of column 2 and beginning of column 3)!
2/4/24 Update: I published an update for the final version (there shouldn’t be any more updates unless an error is pointed out to me or I notice something I didn’t do right). I changed the cover photo and added a picture of the end of column 3! Happy Knitting!
I wanted to share a little bit about why I decided to write and share a pattern for a hexagon and start sharing my thoughts and designs as a new designer. So here it goes…
A while back I saw a lot of people doing crochet hexagons. I wanted to join in on the hexagon fun, but I didn’t want to crochet at that time. My wrists can’t handle crocheting as often as knitting. If I crochet too much, they pop and hurt. I looked for a garter stitch hexagon pattern. I knew I wanted garter stitch over stockinette. I only found a couple garter stitch hexagon patterns, so I tried them both out. The first left me with a large hexagon that was a little elongated (the diagonal sides were longer than the horizontal sides). So I tried the other pattern. It had an error in the instructions that could be interpreted 2 different way (I don’t want to get into the details as the pattern was a paid for pattern). I did try to reach out to the designer to get clarification, but never received an answer. I tried knitting the pattern in the 2 ways I interpreted. Neither one resulted in a hexagon I liked the looks of. They weren’t quite the size I was going for and like the other pattern, it looked elongated or stretched. This is when I decided to try making my own hexagon. I knew I wanted a decent size hexagon (not too big or small…a size good for minis or scraps) and that I wanted all of the sides (diagonal and horizontal) to be the same length so that it was of equal proportions and not stretched or elongated. After several trials and errors, knitting and frogging, and throwing away some yarn that had been worked with so much it was practically strings and breaking, I had a product I was happy with. So I started knitting my little hexagon strips. I hadn’t decided whether I wanted to take the step of putting my pattern out in the world and start designing my own patterns and ideas or not, but decided to share my pattern after the lovely and warm response from the knitting community asking for what pattern I used. Several people told me they had seen the crochet hexagons, but not knit hexagons and I also had a few people telling me that they were having similar issues with what few patterns are out there and not being happy with the results.
And that is what started this new adventure and releasing my first pattern to the public.
