Inspired by the stitch pattern ‘A Bit of Scotland’ from the book Knitting Counterpanes, by Mary Walker Phillips, this simple but elegant knit / purl stitch pattern features a five-stitch cable.
The original counterpane is in the collection of the National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh. It featured a 7-stitch cable, flower motif with solid purl flower, large bordering knit/purl blocks, and seed stitch edge borders. Using odd numbers for cables was a traditional knitting technique used in many 19th-century designs. It creates a cable with less tension in the twist than our modern day even stitch cables.
The center cable of the Highland Thistle Scarf has knit/purl flowers (which I fancifully see as thistles) on either side, and all bordered with knit/purl blocks an a slip-stitch edging. A handsome textured scarf to keep one warm when the winds are high and the temperatures low.
Pattern was professionally tech edited by Robin Melanson.
