Hiirnaqtuq (pronounced here-knock-tookh) socks are inspired by the award-winning children’s picture book, “The Sweetest Kulu,” written by acclaimed Inuit throat singer Celina Kalluk. The book tells the story of an Inuit newborn being welcomed into arctic landscapes and the sweet fierceness of a mother’s love.

The socks feature a simple slipped stitch pattern at the cuff that brings to life the places where mountain, sky and sea meet. Although the colorwork looks complex, it’s easily created with slipped stitches and is designed for beginning sock knitters.

The pattern name, Hiirnaqtuq, is Inuvaluktun (or Inuit) for something sweet.
