Hinulgi Hat & Headband
The weaving motif featured in this design is known as many names throughout the Highlands of the Cordilleras. Hinulgi is the Ifugao name of this weaving motif.
The Ifugao belief surrounding this motif relates to ones ancestry. When an Ifugao person dies, it is customary for them to be buried with blankets. As the soul of the deceased journeys to the afterlife, the blankets will serve as an offering to the ancestors. These blankets will contain in it the Hinulgi Motif repeated as many times as the number of the dead’s direct descendants.
This design was made in collaboration with The Knitting Expedition, a company that crafts cute toys, home decor and woolly warmers which are hand knit by women who tend to the rice terraces in the Ifugao region. In a way this design comes full circle as a homage to their homeland and a way of life they are working tirelessly to continue.
