About this design
What’s not to love about a floral motif surrounded by a simple squared off border? The Hip to Be Square motif has a gentle flower child vibe with softly curving petals surrounded by some lacy spaces and then a granny square border, all fused together with a join-as-you-go construction method to make a gorgeous scarf. The Hip to Be Square Scarf will bring echoes of Spring and Summer into your life if you are moving in to the colder months and if you are already leaving the cold, dark days of Winter behind, it will make a perfect season-transition accessory.

This design is a fabulous stash buster as it provides an opportunity to use up all those lovely little nubbins of left-over yarn that we all have kicking around in our stash. It is also a design where you can let your inner colourist run wild. My finished Hip to Be Square is a garden of soft yellows, pinks, corals, reds and a dash of forget-me-knot blue all against a soft cream background. However, this design would work equally well with wild and vibrant colours, or a more subdued and less varied palette.

The design uses as “join-as-you-go” assembly method and I have included diagrams to provide a detailed description of how to join your motifs.

Tension
A single blocked square crocheted with a 3 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) hook measures approximately 6.5 cm/2 ½ ins when measured along each edge. A close match for tension is important for this pattern in order to ensure that your finished scarf is the correct width and length. Please move up or down a hook size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.

Yarn
This design requires a range of colours in fingering/4 ply weight yarn and the yarn amounts needed for each colour will vary from project to project. For a single square, you will need:

• 2.14 metres/2.3 yards for the centre disc.
• 3.5 metres/3.85 yards for the flower petals.
• 6.8 metres/7.4 yards for the edge of the square.

The finished Hip to Be Square Scarf contains 66 completed square units, which means that you will need a total of:

• 142 metres/152 yards for all the centre discs.
• 231 metres/254 yards for all the petals.
• 449 metres/489 yards for all the square edges.
• 25 metres/27 ½ yards for the edging.

The sample Hip to Be Square Scarf used a total of 14 colours, all drawn from leftovers in my 4ply/fingering weight stash (2 shades of Red, Candy Pink, Coral Pink, 5 shades of Yellow, Baby Blue, Orange, Orange Multi-Dye, Pink/Purple/Coral Multi-Dye, White, Cream, and Cream as the main colour). The main colour is Patons Dreamtime Merino 4 ply in shade 900051 (Cream).

Hooks
3.0 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) crochet hook.

Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
Colouring pencils, crayons/textas (optional).
