Hippen Happen
The Hippen Happen Shawl is included in my collection “Guernsey in Pink and 7 more shawls” that could be bought at a special price: 8.95Euros only for 8 shawl-patterns. VAT might come on top for many European countries.
Hippen Happen is an expression I borrowed from my boyfriend. He uses it to describe something that happens randomly. Sometimes the result is a real mess, sometimes it can turn out quite good:)
When working my Hippen Happen shawl I had a clear sketch and a way to go, but I didn’t know how the different stitch-patterns and colors would work together, neither how far the yardage would get me. In the end I think the result has surpassed my expectations:)
Hippen Happen is a triangular shawl worked inside out (top-down) starting from an icord-cast on. The main body of the shawl is worked using 3 different colors in different stitch-patterns: garter, eyelet-pattern, Roman stitch. The edging of the shawl is worked in an elegant and simple lace-pattern, followed by a picot edging worked side-ways.
The knitting has a great rhytm to it; I really liked working it:))
Size The measurements of the sample are:
Wingspan 150cm(59inches). Height of center spine 75cm(29.5inches). You could easily customize the sizing by adding or subtracting rows of the main body.
Materials You need 1132meters/1237 yards of fingering weight wool to work the shawl. You could use one single color or several mixed together.
I used the following:
MC: 400meters/437 yards of Hedgehog Fibres “Sock” - colorway stone
CC1: 366meters/400 yards of Hedgehog Fibres “Skinny Single” - colorway Daydream
CC2: 366meters/400 yards of Hedgehog Fibres “Skinny Single” - colorway Artifact.
Needles: You need a circular needle, at least 80cm/32” in the size to obtain gauge. I used size 3mm/US2.5 - this is a suggestion only.
You need a crochet hook 2,25mm to work the provisional cast on (3 sts only). 1 stitch-marker. Blunt tapestry needle. Tools for blocking using your preferred method.
Gauge 24 sts in garter = 10cm/4”
The pattern The pattern explains how to work the icord cast-on. The eyelet-pattern and Roman stitch patterns are written row-by-row. The lace-pattern of the border is charted. The picot edging is written row-by-row. There are stitch-counts after EVERY change of pattern.
Knitting skillsI-cord cast-on (explained), working lace from chart. Increases by m1l, m1r. Abbreviations used are: k, p, yo, ssk, k2tog, sl2(as if to k2tog)k1psso, m1l, m1r, yo twice.
