Welcome to the Historic Portland Shawl Mystery Knit-A-Long. I’m so excited you decided to join us as we practice old skills and maybe learn a few new ones. This MKAL is set-up in 4 parts spaced two weeks apart to give you time to finish each section before we move on to the next. With any luck your shawl will be done in time for Christmas and the perfect gift for someone on your list.

Each section of this shawl highlights a different historic aspect of Portland, Oregon and is represented by a different skill as well. There will be lace, cables, duplicate stitching, and beads in this shawl. While I only used two colors, you could easily use four colors for this shawl and make it even more special. My recommended yarn for this project is Teresa Ruch Tencel in 3/2, but you could easily sub in most sport weight yarns. Each section was created to use about 150 yards of heavy sport yarn. If you were really feeling creative, sock weight or fingering weight yarns could be used, but I would substitute the 6/0 seed beads for 8/0 seed beads. Your resulting shawl will be a bit narrower, but still wearable!

This is a rectangular shaped shawl and knit from side to side. I use circular needles for my project, but you could use straights.

This pattern is meant for adventurous beginning knitter to experienced knitters and all those in-between. Both written and charted directions are included in this pattern. Please read the entire pattern before beginning.

Yarn: 2 Skeins Teresa Ruch Desgins 3/2, 312 yards, 100% Tencel, Turquoise and Blue Jazz (other suggestions are Swans Island Sport, Coop Knits SocksYeah! Fyberspates Vivacious 4-Ply)

Needle: US 5 (3.75 mm) Signature circulars or needles to obtain gauge

Gauge: 5.5 stitches per inch (spi) and 8 rows per inch (rpi) OR 22 stitches & 32 rows to 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette

Size: ? inches from tip to tip, ? inches from neck edge to widest point

To alter the size: Add or subtract repeats of the chart OR adjust your gauge to increase or decrease the length of the scarf as needed.
