The story
The History of Trees shawl is inspired by the book ’Barkskins’ by Annie Proulx. A fictional work about the state of the North-American forests from the 17th century up to 2013. The book really spoke to me and so I have tried to picture the state of the forests within this shawl, and divided the design into three ‘chapters’, each using a different stitch and color (combination).
The design is part of the Read-With-Me-Collection, which already has the Hotel of Bees Shawl, The Shell Collector Shawl and the Sea of Flames Shawl.

Each pattern within this collection is inspired on a book and the pattern is always accompanied by extra text to capture the feeling from the book.

This pattern consists of

  • Written instructions (US and UK terms) accompanied by photo’s where needed
  • Charts for each chapter
  • Stitch counts for every row, so you will always know if you’re doing it right. No more frogging!
  • A printer friendly version is also included.

Used Techniques

  • All stitches are inspired by trees and each chapter has it’s own used stitches -> v-stitches, overlay crochet and filet crochet.
  • Standard stitches (US terms): slip stitches, chains, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet.
  • Special stitches: tr, dtr, fptr, fpdtr
  • Special techniques: picking up colors at the side of your work so you don’t have to cut your yarn constantly (explained with photo, text and link to tutorial).
