These mittens were inspired by a hobnail bedspread in my grandparents’ guest room when I was a child.

Pick 2 colors of worsted weight yarn and let’s have some fun!

Moss Stitch texture adds color interest when worked in stripes. The colors can be as bold or subtle as you desire, and even look great with a solid against a varigated yarn.

These mittens are knit flat and seamed, so there’s no need for small circumference tube knitting. That makes them quick.

If you are willing to pull out your gauge swatch and use that yarn, you should be able to get 2 pairs from 2 standard (220 yard/200 m) skeins of worsted weight yarn. Just swap the main color and contrast color for the second pair!

Size
Adult medium, 7 1/2” (19 cm) hand circumference. Mittens should be worn with zero to slight negative ease.
These are long mittens, meant to tuck inside coat sleeves to keep out ice and snow.

Yarn
Approximately 210 yards (192 m) worsted weight yarn. Wool and wool blends highly recommended.
You will need

• about 130 yards (119 m) of the main color
• about 80 yards (73 m) of the contrast color

Gauge
22 sts and 30 rows to 4” (10 cm) in Moss Stitch

Tools
US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles, or size required to obtain gauge
US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles, or 1 size smaller than that used to obtain gauge. Smaller needle is used for ribbing.

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
