Hodgeheg Mittens
These simple fingerless mittens are suitable for new knitters as well as more experienced knitters wanting a quick but effective pattern for keeping hands warm. Knit sideways with a simple thumb opening, this pattern does not require knitting in the round. If you can knit garter stitch, cast on and off, then you can make these.
Garter stitch can take heavily variegated yarns, so go as wild as you like with your yarn choice! The pattern is written for DK weight yarn but with notes for adapting for Aran weight. The little “teeth” along the top edge add just enough interest and a pleasing rhythm to the knitting. I hope you have fun knitting and wearing these mittens.
This pattern was originally designed for a beyond beginners knitting workshop I taught. I have decided to make this a permanently free pattern to encourage new knitters everywhere.
