1 x knitting Pattern for Hogs Swatch Cowl

The story of how this cowl got its name is in the pattern, but for now I want you to imagine yourself on the Discworld. You are looking out of a window in Ankh Morpork, snow is falling and flashes of colour dart across the sky. Is that The Hogfather? Or is it Death with a fake beard and a cushion shoved up his tunic?

And what’s that in the snow? Has Susan dropped her bent poker?

Oh and look at that pile of snow? Or is it a pile of teeth?

And what are those strange plus signs in the sky? Better ask Hex about that!

This cowl, and the associated KAL, is a homage to some of the themes to be found within Sir Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather and each of the three sections (these are explained in the pattern) that make up the cowl’s wintry scene has a little related detail within it. Now whether you include the little details is entirely up to you, just as the colours you use are entirely up to you.

The yarns I used for the sample were dyed for the limited edition Hogs Swatch Cowl kits. Although these are now sold out, you can use these colours to inspire your colourway or you can use your colourway of choice. You can buy new DK yarn or use DK yarn from you stash. This is your cowl after all and the mission of the Hogs Swatch Cowl KAL is “Do it your way!”

There are two versions of this colourwork pattern: The flat knit ‘swatch’ version and a knit in the round version. Both are fun to knit, and each are quite simple as you get into them. And if you have any questions just ask or join my Facebook group Hogs Swatchers which is now up and running and can be found through my Facebook page.

I hope that you’ll consider joining me for the KAL. Cast on is New Year’s Day, but I’m not going to tell anyone if you decide to cast it on sooner or if you just want to knit this away from the KAL. All I ask is that you try have fun with this project. But if you do want to take part in the KAL, it starts on January 1st so make sure you’re following me on Facebook and Instagram for more updates.
