The Holiday in the City Socks were inspired by the big city at Christmas. Everyone has a city that comes to mind when they think of “the city”. The holiday season is my favorite time to visit my version. The lights and the decorations always add a magical element to what can be a normally overwhelming place. For others, it’s the holiday markets and festive cheer. However, these socks are a reflection of what’s universal in every city, the buildings. Various shapes and sizes of buildings make up the iconic skylines and capture the attention of both holiday shoppers and tourists. The mismatched ribbing is an ode to those towering giants.

Gauge:

8 stitches/per inch using 2.25 mm circular needles.

Sizing:

1 (2,3) - which fits a foot circumference of (unstretched) 7.25 inches (7.50 inches, 8 inches around).

When choosing a size, focus on your foot circumference rather than the length of your foot.

Yarn:

The sample is knit from West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply. I would suggest any yarn that gives you a gauge of 8 stitches/inch.

Sample: 1 Ball West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply 75% Wool, 25% Nylon 437 yards/100g.

Similar yarns can be found here: https://yarnsub.com/yarns/west_yorkshire_spinners/signatu...

I like Regia’s 4ply solid sock, as well as Trekking XXL.

Materials:

  • US 1 (2.25) circular knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge), I recommend at least 32 inches (my preferred length). You can substitute DPNs and 9-inch circulars for circulars as well and I’ll show you how.
  • 100 grams of fingering-weight sock yarn.
  • Stitch marker or locking stitch marker (optional).
  • Ruler or measuring tape.
  • Darning needle.
  • Sock blockers to photograph your socks once you’re done! (optional).
