Holly Jolly Jumper (Ugly Christmas Sweater)
The Holly Jolly Jumper is meant for winter holiday parties, and could work as your next go-to Ugly Christmas Sweater! I designed this so that I could wear this at my local brewery’s Ugly Christmas Sweater contest! Knit this if you want to stand out in a crowd as being Merry and Bright!
Colorwork is worked seamlessly from the top-down, and throughout the body. Sleeves can be striped, or knit in a solid color. The collar, cuffs, and body hem are all folded, in a 2x2 colorwork pattern for a “peppermint” effect!
Special stitch techniques such as creating nupps and the loop stitch are explained in the pattern, but it is important that you also watch the linked tutorials in the techniques section, which can be accessed digitally via the PDF.
Use of scrap yarn is encouraged. My sample used a collection of woolen-spun yarn, and I recommend a rustic, rough woolen-spun yarn for the loop stitches, because they will feel more secure than if you use a silk or synthetic yarn for the loops. Keep in mind that if you use a different yarn base than the sample, be sure you gauge swatch and block to make sure you achieve the desired finished measurements for your size.
The suggested positive ease is somewhere between 2-6”/5-15cm. Knit the size that will achieve the ease of your choice. For example, my bust size is 37”, and so I knit the size C (39”) to achieve 2” of positive ease.
Bust/Chest: A (33”/84cm), B (36”/91cm), C (39”/99cm), D (42”/107cm), E (45”/114cm), F (48”/122cm), G (54”/137cm), H (60”/152cm), I (63”/160cm)
Gauge: 20 sts & 26 rounds = 4” in stockinette colorwork in the round on larger needles after blocking
Materials Needed: DK weight yarn:
Overall yardage: approx. 1200 (1350, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1900, 2400, 2600, 2750) yds; 1097 (1234, 1372, 1463, 1544, 1737, 2195, 2377, 2515) m in various colors of DK and/or worsted weight yarn.
Needles & Notions:
US size 5 needles: 16” for collar
US size 7 needles: small circumference for sleeves, 16”, 24”, & 40” for yoke and body
BOR stitch marker, waste yarn (for sleeve separation), & tapestry needle
Yarn & Yardage:
Sample in photo made in size C with:
Shepherd’s Wool Worsted, by Stonehedge Fiber Mill 250 yds/4 oz. or 229m/113g in Red, Green, & Yellow
Renew DK, by Abundant Earth Fiber: 240 yds/3.5oz 219m/100g in “Flecked White” and “Grey”
My Sample Yardage based on Five Colorways:
MC (red), CC1 (white), CC2 (yellow), CC3, (green), CC4 (grey)
Note: these estimates are based on the sample. This is a customizable pattern, and choosing your own body charts, as well as your own striping pattern for the sleeves will affect the yardage for specific colors. This project encourages use of scrap yarn of DK or worsted weight, and so overall yardage, versus yardage for specific colors, tends to matter most. Feel free to use more than five colors, provided that you have enough overall yardage to complete the project.
MC: 325 (365, 390, 435, 460, 515, 650, 702, 745) yds; 297 (333, 357, 398, 421, 471, 594, 642, 681) m
