To achieve tight stitches, this pattern uses the amigurumi technique of crocheting with a hook that is smaller than recommended for the yarn.

DK (light worsted) yarn is used for the leaves, while the berries require a thinner 4-ply (sport/fingering) yarn. For stiff leaves, it’s better to use cotton yarn as it doesn’t stretch as much as acrylic or wool. If you opt to use a lighter or heavier yarn, use the smallest hook possible to maintain the stiffness of the leaf.

You can substitute the crocheted berries with 1cm felted balls, buttons, or beads. However, ensure that you thread them onto your green yarn before starting the leaf using a needle (a sharp one for the felt balls).

Materials:

  • 5g/0.2oz of DK cotton yarn in green.
  • 1g/0.04oz of 4-ply cotton yarn in red.
  • Crochet hooks sizes 2.25mm (B-1) and 1.75mm (steel thread hook size 5).

Dimensions:
Leaf length: 2.5 inches (6cm)
Leaf width: 2.25 inches (5.5cm)
Total length including loop: 4.5 inches (11.5cm)

Gauge isn’t important - you should be aiming for tight stitches to keep your work stiff. If your crochet style is loose, you may wish to go down a hook size.
