I made this headband with a mix of cables that (together with the yarn I picked) gives it the look of the Hollyhock flower. I constructed it in such a way that it is narrower in the back and wider in the front. This helps it sit better on the head.

If you are looking for multiple patterns for cabled headbands, check out my bundle and get them for a discount.

You will get a PDF document that includes:

  • Written instructions in English, using US, UK and metric measurements and needle sizes
  • Chart of the whole pattern (you can use the written instructions without the chart; this is just here in case you prefer charts)
  • Instructions for making the headband larger or smaller

All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

Skills required: knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase and decrease. The cables are explained in detail, so you can do it even if you don’t have a lot of experience with cables.

Size

The instructions are for a headband that fits most adult women’s heads (approximately 55 cm / 21.5 inches). You can make it smaller or larger by repeating Rows 1-6 at the beginning, or Rows 127-131 at the end.

The width is about 11 cm (4.4 inches) at the widest point, and about 7 cm (2.75 inches) at the narrowest point. You can make it wider by adding 1-2 stitches at the beginning and at the end of each row (thereby widening the garter stitch edge). You can make it narrower (for example, for a child) by using lower weight yarn and smaller sized needles.

Recommended yarn

DK weight, wool or acrylic that is slightly elastic. You will need around 90-100 metres (100-110 yards)

Gauge: 21 stitches per 10 cm (= 8 per inch) in garter stitch

Needles

  • Knitting needles of 4mm / 8 UK / 6 US or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • (Optional) Crochet needle size 3 mm (US C or D, UK 11) to create neat edges.
  • Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.
  • Tapestry needle to bind off (optional)

Enjoy making this lovely unique headband!
