It was still winter. It was still winter, but the snow melted away on a fluke day that the jet stream had gently carried milder southern temperatures far north. The geese had returned. Today, cold was back. The fields looked like autumn. Dry and bare like the first day in late November but it was February. The second year of the month gazing through the mirror at the second. She turned, her gaze traveling back across the expanse of field to the small house. Dusk was beginning to set and the tall trees rose slightly above the horizon, hot air balloon shapes of empty branches bubbling up over the sharp angles of the metal roof. A lone lantern mounted by the door scattered warm beams of light across the path leading up to it. Within, a warm faded quilt patched together similarly to a homemade pot of soup- hands carefully measuring, cutting, and then assembling in love. She headed homeward, saying goodbye to the geese that had already gathered at the wood’s edge.
