In the United States Navy, the battle cry is “HOOYAH!!!” and according to my boyfriend, it’s rarely used, at least by the submariners. Since our first winter together was his first New England style winter (he’s from the mid-Atlantic), I knew that I should knit him a hat or he’d be yelling something a little more “salty” upon stepping outside on his first day of sub-freezing temps. After measuring his head, I found it nearly impossible to locate a hat that would fit his 22 inch head… so I knit up a swatch, did the math, and came up with this. It’s a bit big on him but he loves it and he wears it nearly everywhere, he actually prefers it over the standard issue hat that he got from the Navy!

Update:

if you’ve noted that this hat is HUGE… it’s b/c my husband (yes, we’ve now married) is a bit of an idiot when it comes to taking care of wool. this hat has been washed a few times in the washing machine and it’s survived and shrank a bit. now that it’s shrunk, it fits him a bit better. i also folded the brim to where he wanted it then sewed in a fleece liner as he kept complaining about it being itchy and not warm enough.
